Standard Processing
We make ordering slide and negative scanning for the digital age as
easy as getting your film developed. It's as simple as deciding what print size you want
from your scans. If you need
assistance, give us a call or go to the
Contact page to send
us a message over the Web.
For standard processing, the table below shows the available print
sizes you can choose from when placing an order. The print size you
select will produce the best print possible for any smaller print
size as well.

Custom Processing
If you are a photographer, graphic artist, web designer, or you have
unique scanning requirements, like PowerPoint presentations, we do
custom scanning as well, and can scan your slides or negatives at any
desired resolution, up to 4000 DPI, and at a bit depth of 8 or 16 bits
per channel. For those who require more color tone precision with little or
no noise, we offer multi-sampling at up to 16x, and we offer several
color spaces to choose from.

What You Should Know
We're not the only web-based scanning company and you may have
found someone local - so why choose
us? What makes us different from the rest? Why does a large percentage
of our business come from repeat customers?
Before you order scanning services from us or anyone else, we
suggest that you look for the following features when shopping for the
best quality and value:
- Insist on TIFF & JPEG file scanning output
- Insist on complete Digital ICE
- Insist that a professional-grade film scanner be used
- Insist on manual hand-fed scanning
- Insist on free cropping and rotating
- Insist that your scanning be done in the US
The above features are all standard at Gemega
Imaging and we don't charge extra for carousels, cubes, and trays,
cleaning, or scanning selected frames from a negative strip. Read on
to see why these are important features to consider.
TIFF Files
We don't charge more for TIFF file scanning
output. TIFF files contain all of the image data
captured during the scan. Nothing is discarded, meaning you have
access to all of the original image data for retouching, resizing, and
making photo-quality prints. TIFF is an excellent format for image
preservation and archiving.
JPEG files are compressed to create a much smaller file, but there
is a downside that you should be aware of. When the image is
compressed, image data is lost forever and every time the image is
edited and saved, more original image data is lost. JPEG is great for
emailing and transporting images over the Web, TV viewing, and
PowerPoint presentations, but it is not a good format for professional
applications, image editing, and image preservation and archiving.
Digital ICE4
We don't charge more for Digital ICE4 processing. All scans
include Digital ICE (Dust & Scratches), Digital ROC (Restore Color),
Digital GEM (Remove Grain), and Digital DEE (Fix Underexposures). We do a raw scan for those customers who want to edit and retouch the
scanned images
themselves, but for the majority of our customers, one or more
components of the Digital ICE suite may be needed to restore slides
and
negatives to their original condition. See the sidebar for a brief
explanation or see our
Image Enhancements page for an
illustration of what these options can do.
Film Scanner
We use a professional Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED film scanner.
Flatbed scanners, even at higher resolutions than 4000 DPI, aren't up to the task
of
scanning slides and negatives as small as 35mm.
That's why we use a dedicated film scanner designed specifically for
scanning 35mm slides and negatives. We chose Nikon for its superior optics.
Manual Scanning
We don't charge more for exposure corrections. Every
slide or negative is scanned individually by hand, previewed,
analyzed, and manually corrected until the best possible image is
acquired. Corrections are made to restore color balance, color
saturation, brightness and contrast, and if you choose ICE or ICE, we
attempt to remove any remaining dust and scratches
ICE misses.
These results can only be achieved by hand
where the operator's experienced eye can inspect the scan and make the
appropriate exposure corrections. For that reason, we don't use a bulk slide
loader, press go, and let a machine with its auto-correction features
do all the work. It's not uncommon that our scans look even better
than the original.
Cropping and Rotating
We don't charge more for Cropping and
Rotating. Even though cropping and rotating takes some extra time,
it is minimal compared to all of the other corrections we make, so we
don't charge more to do it. You should never have to pay extra for cropping
and rotating. Because TIFF files are used for printing, editing, and
archiving purposes, we don't rotate these files unless you request it.
All Scanning is Done in the US
Do you really want your precious memories
shipped overseas for processing? Some of our competitors offer
scanning at prices that are simply too good to be true. To do that,
they are probably outsourcing their work overseas.
Last Word
We're confident that when you learn what you
should expect from any scanning service, our services stack up pretty
well and our level of quality is unsurpassed. But don't take our word
for it. Read the testimonials or do some research.
There are plenty of resources on the Web. Here's
one,
if you want a good Scanning 101 crash course.

We scan every slide or negative at a scanning resolution that yields
the desired print size
at 300 DPI. This produces sharp photo-quality prints and the
smallest possible file sizes. You receive two
image files for each scan. For printing and archiving, the scanned
image is saved as an uncompressed TIFF file. A TIFF file contains
all the image data captured during the scan and is the
industry-standard format.
The TIFF file is resized to create a high quality JPEG file 720 pixels in length or width, depending on the
image's orientation.
Digital ICE technology is used to remove dust
and scratches, restore color, eliminate film grain, and recover lost
detail from shadows and highlights.
Digital ICE does not blur or soften the image to
remove dust and scratches. It is integrated with the scanner to
create a "defect" channel. This "defect" channel is then used by the
scanning software to remove dust and scratches.
We use Digital ICE
by default and there is no additional charge for
this option. If you prefer, you can turn this option off or select
Digital ICE only on the Order form, but it is highly recommended
that you have us use Digital ICE.
Digital ICE removes dust and scratches only.

benefits of using Digital ICE technology, click

and then visit our Image Enhancements
page to see some examples.
For Standard processing, we crop to remove the
black border, scan every
image for the print size indicated, and rotate the image if necessary
unless you tell us otherwise on the Order form.
35mm slide and negative film is small and must be
enlarged much more than medium format film or prints scanned on a
flat-bed scanner. To do that properly, we use a professional-grade film scanner.
We scan every slide and negative in a dust-free environment using
the Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED film scanner. |

We scan every slide or negative at any scanning resolution,
up to 4000 DPI, at a bit-depth of 8 or 16 bits per channel, and save
the image in any Photoshop-compatible file format.
For more precise color tones and to eliminate
noise produced by the scanner, we offer multi-sampling up to 16x.
Images are saved in the sRGB color-space profile
by default, and others are available on the Order Form.
You receive two

image is saved as an uncompressed TIFF file. A TIFF file contains
all the image data captured during the scan and is the
industry-standard format.
The TIFF file is resized to create a high quality JPEG file 720 pixels in length
and/or width, depending on the frame size.
